Android Lollipop OS Name Reveal

Believe it or not, the biggest debate among Android fanboys and developers on the interwebs leading up to the release of Android OS 5.0, codenamed "L", wasn't over a new feature or element of functionality. It was over what the "L" stood for.

Each Android OS release is named after a sweet confection, following an alphabetical naming convention--the two previous releases were Jellybean and KitKat-- and this year there was hot debate over what candy "L" stood for. With speculation getting out of control (there were fanboys betting cold hard cash that they were sure the name was Lemon Meringue Pie, others swore it was licorice, one Developer from Mumbai started a campaign to name it Ladoo, and so on...), we were asked to create teaser and announcement videos to once and for all settle the question of what the letter L stands for.

It began with a tweet from Sundar Pichai, SVP of Android:

Met some sweet new friends today. #NationalDessertDay #Android https://t.co/KNxe1LjpgI

In under 24 hours the video racked up over 500k views, and simultaneously blew up reddit.

To stoke the fire we started on reddit, we teased a bit more:

And then came the reveal:

Some highlights from the Reddit insanity:

In almost every frame we added easter-eggs to throw off our super-fans. They clearly took the bait, and some maybe took it a little too far...

Clearly we were a bit more adept at nerd-charming than we thought.
